Vale Dr John Mayhew

International Rugby League is saddened by the passing of Dr John Mayhew.

John was a founding member of the IRL’s Player Safety Advisory Group in early 2024 and continued in his role until his death last week, aged 70.

He had a long association with rugby league and sport, also serving as New Zealand Rugby League’s Chief Medical Officer.

Dr Mayhew was the Warriors team doctor for 14 seasons from 2006 to 2019, after 16 years with the New Zealand All Blacks.

In 2016, he was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to sports medicine, reflecting his significant contributions to the field.

IRL Chair Troy Grant said: “On behalf of International Rugby League, I wish to pass on our condolences to the family, friends and many players who came under Dr Mayhew’s care during their careers.

“John was regarded as one of the best medical practitioners in the sporting world and he made significant contributions to rugby league with the New Zealand Warriors, New Zealand Rugby League and International Rugby League.

“Dr Mayhew cared about the welfare of players and the game, and he was an invaluable member of the IRL’s Player Safety Advisory Group who will be sadly missed by many across the rugby league world.”
