The current Wales Rugby League organisation was formed in 1995 and is a descendant of the RFL’s Welsh Commission [1926]. In 2005 WRL received full governing body status and was recognised collectively by the RFL, the British Amateur Rugby League Association and the Welsh Sports Council.
An original Affiliate Member of the ERL, Wales became the twelfth Member [full] of the IRL following a meeting in Melbourne in May 2010, and a Full Member of the ERL in October that same year.
WRL employed its first professional chairman in 2006. The chair presides over a Board representing the key stakeholders in the game, with Directors drawn from the Welsh clubs, the RFL, the Crusaders RL club, and three co-opted specialists, including Directors drawn from the Welsh Assembly.
Structurally, WRL operates National Development, Football and Media departments, and employs a number of community coaches in the various counties of Wales, predominantly in the south, the Principality’s traditional rugby heartland.
Club competitions are held at a number of age categories, while senior football is played in the two division Co-operative Welsh Conference, and professional opportunities provided by two clubs. Wales deploys international sides at full, amateur, student, U18 and U16 levels.
